Gunung Mas, Eco Village In West Aceh we have adopted a village. Gunung Mas was formed spontaneously after the Tsunami by displaced Achinese, answering the needs of many refugees/survivors or tsunami and war roaming around Aceh seeking communal sustenance. Essentially it’s a zero carbon “eco-” village on “new land” in the interior of Aceh that we’re building, rather than on the coastal sites ravaged by the tsunami. With electricity generated from river power, traditional farming and extensive tree replanting we are hoping to create a model for similar sustainable eco-agro communities in Aceh’s interior deforested and depopulated during the 30 years war. The traditional Achinese Pesantren (boarding schools) system constitutes the core community unit and network. Gunung Mas pesantren/village has allocated 500 hectares for tree replanting and another 500 hectares for sustainable cultivation.

The Forest by satellite
This is perhaps our most ambitious single project to date. It involves watching and thereby saving a world heritage site, the Gunung Leuser tropical rainforest.
By placing a network of cameras all around the forest from the inside, highlighting locations of interest for their flora, fauna or phenomena the forest will become an interactive satellite TV channel.
The channel will be accessible by classrooms around the world as an educational teaching resource, whereby it will be possible to surf between multiple cameras in the forest, each one focussed on a point of interest in the forest. Operation Khalifah.Read more >
